The ability to upgrade items allows players to enhance their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, boosting its stats base or giving additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.

Typically items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, while items with strong bases like Eth titans don't change significantly in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

In the case of upgrades for gathering tools, if a player replaces one glyph by another, the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component will damage it, with the exception of inscribed glyphs that can be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important changes from previous versions. Gear is now categorized in tracks, and each item can be upgraded so many times before it is "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, however the materials needed do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a few key items and maximize their impact instead of spreading cost of upgrades across several items.
